Atauro is a small quiet gem of an island just 25 km north of Dili, Timor-Leste.
There is only one ferry a day that goes from Dili to Atauro and back. It leaves Dili at 8am and returns from Atauro at 4pm. It’s a very slow 3 hour journey. So if you do a day trip (which I did), you would spend 6 hours traveling over water for around 6 hours on the island. I only had the weekend, so I had no choice but to do a day trip. It was worth every minute.
A look back at Cristo Rei in Dili from the waters Day dreaming along the way. Soaking up the sun. A good time to be still. With the final destination in sight, the whole journey feels so worth it. Blue crystal clear waters and unchanged shores, all I wanted to do was jump in the water. The restless passengers are buzzing with energy as they leave the ferry with supplies and luggage in hand. Along the shore there are markets selling dried seafood and bags of seaweed. People stop for lunch of barbecue seafood, corn on a cob and coconut drinks.
It’s peaceful, it’s calm, every body is taking it easy. Life can be so simple.
All in a journey to Atauro.
